Chili is a delicious and versatile dish that can be made in many different ways. Here is a basic recipe for making a classic beef chili:
Ingredients:
2 lbs. ground beef
1 onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (14.5 oz. each) diced tomatoes
2 cans (15 oz. each) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, chopped green onions, sliced jalapeños
Instructions:
In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Drain off any excess fat.
Add the onion and garlic to the pot, and sauté for a few minutes until the onion is translucent.
Add the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, and tomato paste to the pot, and stir to combine.
Add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper to the pot, and stir to combine.
Bring the chili to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for at least 30 minutes (or up to a few hours) to allow the flavors to meld together.
Serve hot, garnished with your favorite toppings if desired.
Tips for making the best chili:
Use a mix of ground beef and ground pork for added flavor and texture.
Add a variety of beans, such as black beans or pinto beans, for extra protein and flavor.
Use fire-roasted tomatoes for a smoky flavor, or add a can of diced green chilies for a bit of heat.
Adjust the spices to your taste, and add more chili powder or cumin for a spicier chili.
Allow the chili to simmer for at least 30 minutes to give the flavors time to develop. The longer it simmers, the better it will taste!
